Tai chi is an ancient Chinese martial art and exercise that has shown to improve health and wellness.  Harvard medical school has said that “Tai Chi is not only meditation in motion, but medication in motion.”  There have been several studies that Tai Chi has been effective to help with balance, heart conditions, immune system, and stress reduction.  It is a fantastic exercise and martial art.

Master Lu at Master Lu’s Health Center in Salt Lake City has been teaching and practicing Tai Chi for over 40 years.  Master Lu’s Health Center has classes throughout the week to help you learn and experience the health benefits of Tai Chi.

When practicing Tai Chi there are several essential elements to pay attention to when practicing.  When you follow the essential principles to the best of your ability, your Tai Chi practice and skill will deepen. You will also feel better, energized, and balanced.

The Essential Principles to Tai Chi Practice

  1. When Tai Chi Chuan is practiced, you practice according to principles of the abstract and the concrete. The excellent changes you make are in accordance with natural tendencies. During practice you should feel no imbalance—up or down, left or right, high or low, forward or backward—each movement must incorporate certain principles. Movements of you hands, eyes, torso, waist, and steps must all be consistent. In turn, the spiritual essence of power you feel will accumulate.
  1. Your body will follow natural lines that continually change. You should do each movement calmly, as you employ the natural tendencies of movement externally for the limbs and internally for the organs. Following the natural lines introduces eternal happiness.   The heart introduces the qi, the qi moves through the body, and through an entire cycle in which it exercises the bones, the tendons, and the muscles. The hand, eye body movements, and stance are well tempered. Proceeding from the heart, through practice, this refinement is achieved; an endless natural energy fills the body.
  1. When you practice Tai Chi, don’t be sloppy. The internal and external are one; breathing and movement never separate. Moderate your temper for this is an accomplishment. Anyone can practice Tai Chi, the old, young, or infirm. Don’t practice in an imbalance way, for this will cause exhaustion. Don’t practice to the point of physical distress for you will have a chance of injury.
  1. To practice Tai Chi you first must be committed. Later, constancy of purpose must be used. Be sincere and investigate thoroughly with diligence. In four months, the heart gains an impression of Tai Chi. Within six months, the whole body and mind come to enlightenment. Lightness of heart develops, as well as a free and relaxed intelligent energy. The spirit comes to move in accordance with the qi, and the body is exhilarated and at ease, filled with ample strength. A thorough understanding comes upon the body and an exquisite state of being. Eventually you achieve a divine understanding.
  1. Tai Chi is practiced not only to maintain the body, but also to prevent or remove invisible sickness. Where drugs may be ineffectual, Tai Chi may control sickness. The body and mind together look after the health in accordance with principles of physiology and hygiene.
  1. When you practice Tai chi clear the mind of worldly thoughts. The spirit and heart become peaceful; the whole mind is devoted with a settled, inflexible will. Move your feet high and low, extend and bend slowly, steadily, and gently. Inhale and exhale in an even way. If the center is stable, the skill will become level and even the movements are arranged with what is right.
  1. Practice these three principles of movement:

From the beginning to the end, be consistent and unchanging. Practice daily, in the morning and evening. Study and imitate a teacher’s style, contemplate his carriage. Gradually, the vitality will become excellent, and the energy doubles. This phrase of the process is incomprehensible, though natural, and exquisiteness of energy is the result of the process.

  1. As you practice Tai Chi, pay attention to these points:

The qi sinks to the dan tian (the area below the stomach)

  1. Exhale through your nose, and inhale to fill the diaphragm. The temper stays even. The root of movement is in the feet. The energy is dispatched to the legs, and the waist is the controller. The energy moves through the arms and permeates the hands and fingers. Movement up and down, forward and backward, to the right and the left, internal and external; a unity of body is accomplished. Every movement is a change in perfection. The energy first opens out and expands, then embraces and gathers a profound silence again and again.   The effect is long lasting: if the effort does not slacken, the self becomes satisfied with the genuine meaning of movement.
  2. Do not practice Tai chi after drinking wine: that would be of no benefit. Do not practice after having eaten to satiation: the intestine is constricted, and practice will injure the stomach and intestine. Do not practice when very hungry, for this will inure the stomach wall. When practicing Tai Chi, don’t cry for crying opposes the qi. When practicing Tai Chi, don’t laugh, for laughing is uneven with the qi. Don’t practice when angry, for this will make the qi contract. Don’t practice Tai Chi if there is a feeling of melancholy in the heart, for this practice will be unsuitable. Practice is most rewarding when done in the morning. Intermittent practice is of little benefit. Excessive practice will lead to fatigue. Regard with the eyes, and remain firm when at rest.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is one of the oldest forms of medicine. It has an over 3000 year old history to diagnose and treat disease. It is a systematical and scientific form of medicine and healing. Over the years acupuncture has gained popularity in western countries.   Most people who seek out acupuncture has been for pain conditions such as low back and neck pain. However, because acupuncture and Chinese medicine is a complete medical system for diagnosing and treating disease, it can help you with many other health conditions besides pain.

Recently, the Acupuncture Now Foundation in collaboration with several other organizations put together a white paper that has shows the current research on many health conditions that acupuncture is effective for.

The white paper also goes through in depth how acupuncture works according to western medical terms. Summarizing the paper acupuncture will act on the nervous system of the body. It will act on the brain and release your body’s natural opioids, chemicals, and hormones such as endorphins, seratonin, and dopamine.  Research has shown  that acupuncture will release seratonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. The releasing of these natural substances within the body will allow your body to self heal. Click on this link for the Acupuncture Now Foundation Whitepaper for an in depth discussion on how acupuncture works.

There are many conditions that acupuncture is good for. Pain has been the most common one. Here at Master Lu’s Health Center in Salt Lake City, we will use acupuncture and Chinese medicine to treat low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, and joint pain. Acupuncture is very effective for pain. The acupuncture now foundation in their white paper has shown that acupuncture can be effective for internal diseases such as depression and fertility.

Health Center Utah

The World Health Organization through research has determined that acupuncture is effective for the following conditions:

As you can see acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be used for more than just pain. Some of the common health conditions that we have treated in our clinic in Salt Lake clinic include stroke rehabilitation, high blood pressure, infertility, diabetes, MS, dizziness, eye disorders, side effects from chemotherapy,  depression, emotional disorders, and gastrointestinal disorders.  There are many other health conditions that doesn’t even have a western term for or the physicians don’t know what it is that we treat as well.

Chinese medicine is a powerful and effective medicine that will help you heal your body and improve your health naturally.

If you feel that you suffer from a health condition and don’t want to take many medications please give us a call to see how we can help you regain your health.

At Master Lu’s Health Center in Salt Lake City, we focus on all aspects of Chinese medicine including acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, nutrition, Chinese medical massage, and exercise.

Along with our Chinese medical treatments we will recommend food or nutritional therapy that will help you heal.  Chinese medicine nutrition combines ancient wisdom with modern science. Chinese medicine nutrition is a holistic approach, which aims to balance all five flavors within most meals with one or two flavors being emphasized for therapeutic purposes. OM nutrition for a hypertension emphasizes bitter flavors, sour flavors and energetically-cooling foods.

Chinese medical theory states the bitter flavor benefits the heart in moderation but an excess is harmful as it has a drying effect; for example, coffee is bitter. In moderation coffee acts as vasodilator increasing circulation but in excess it can raise blood pressure and has a diuretic effect. Modern scientific research has discovered while the human genome has 25 bitter taste receptors 12 of these are expressed in the human heart.

Foods with bitter flavors include: romaine lettuce, dandelion, arugula, rye. Foods that combine bitter with pungency include: citrus peel, radish, scallion and white pepper. In Chinese medical nutrition the pungent flavor can help disperse phlegm (e.g. plaque). Foods that combine bitter with sweet include: asparagus, celery, tomatoes, lettuce, quinoa and papaya. Lemon rind is bitter and sour; vinegar is also bitter and sour.

Bitter flavors have a yin, or cooling effect, clearing heat in the body while encouraging a descent of Qi, which aids in the draining of fluids. For example, celery contains the phytochemical phthalides which relaxes arterial wall tissues to increase blood flow and thereby reduce blood pressure. The fiber, magnesium and potassium in celery also help lower blood pressure and regulate fluid balance. Caution: according to Chinese medicine, those with a lot of dryness and/or bone disease should moderate their intake of bitter flavor.

A tomato a day keeps the doctor away! The combination of lycopene, vitamin C and E, potassium and folic acid in tomatoes make it a power food for heart health. The bitter flavor of tomatoes come from the seeds; to reap the full benefit of tomatoes eat the seeds too. Heirloom tomatoes in season have the most flavor, find the tastiest tomatoes at your farmer’s market or trying growing your own.

Summer is the season of the heart according to Chinese medicine, meaning it is the season most likely to bring our hearts out of balance if we are exposed to excess heat, which can then create and/or exacerbate internal heat. During the summer Chinese medical nutrition recommends drinking and eating foods that cool the body and heart such as green tea, cucumbers, watermelon and lemon.

Chrysanthemum tea is a very popular summertime tea in Asia because it is so well known for its cooling properties; it is helpful for headaches, dizziness, high blood pressure, chest pain and also fevers. You can add chrysanthemum flowers to your morning green tea and in the evening combine it with chamomile tea for extra cooling benefits!

Chinese medical nutrition cautions against overdoing cold foods and drinks. Too much cold inhibits the digestive process. Drinking warm beverages and soups, as well as eating foods with a little pungency (chili pepper, garlic, ginger) causes the body to perspire slightly which naturally cools the body.

For those who happen to have hypertension plus a lot of dryness: dry skin, dry eyes, dry mouth and thirst, constipation and even hormonal deficiencies can benefit from increasing their healthy fat intake. Many nutrients are fat soluble, the body uses cholesterol to make hormones, bile and vitamin D. Healthy fats nourish yin in OM nutrition theory. Some Americans who suffer from hypertension are also thin with an underlying yin deficiency, such as those with the onset of hypertension that coincides with menopausal symptoms. Sources of healthy fats include: nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, flaxseed oil and fish.

Eating beans, peas and grains are high in potassium, magnesium, fiber and are high in choline which is vital in lowering hypertension and boosting fat metabolism. Whole grains are also a good source of niacin and vitamin E and are recommended for healthy arteries, especially those that are slightly bitter such as: rye, quinoa, amaranth and oats.

Throughout China there are many different forms of exercises. One broad form of exercise is qi gong.   I say broad because there are many different forms of qi gong. One famous set of qi gong is ba duan jin or eight sections of brocade.

Ba Duan Jin is one of the most popular forms of qi gong. It consists of eight simple exercises that will improve you health and wellness. Each exercise is able to improve organ function, blood circulation, and balance in the body.

Tai Chi is one of the oldest forms of exercise practiced around the world. It was originated in China, and up to this date millions of people practice Tai Chi all around the world. One of the great benefits of Tai Chi is that it will improve you health and wellness.

Paul Brennan’s translation of Master Chu Min Yi’s book Tai Chi Boxing Photographed written in 1929 said this statement about Tai Chi and health cultivation:

Boxing arts are essentially a form of physical education, and so health cultivation is naturally a major emphasis. However, this is not represented well by the hard labor of external stylists, and only Taiji Boxing really has the capacity for health cultivation. Regardless of weak or strong, old or young, all can practice it. It is best for us to be able to develop our bodies uniformly, complementing the regular physiological processes within our bodies. Because strenuous exercise does not conform to these processes, it is typically rendered counterproductive.

Hence the movements in Taiji Boxing are unusually delicate. With each movement, the whole body is in motion, and thus no part of the body gets harmfully overworked. Furthermore, because the movements are gentle and nimble, they can regulate the temperament and cultivate one’s character, and because they conform perfectly to physiological processes, they can develop the body uniformly. While practicing, you do not need to put forth undue effort, and so even if you are old or ill, it is not difficult to do. Therefore the claim that it “prevents illness and prolongs life” is truly not a bunch of empty words.

Grandmaster Yin Chian Ho said: “Tai Chi is practiced not only to maintain the body, but also to prevent or remove invisible sickness. Where drugs may be ineffectual , Tai Chi may control sickness. The body and mind together look after the health in accordance with principles of physiology and hygiene.”

As we can see from older teachers, Tai Chi has always been a way for health cultivation.

Some of the many ways Tai Chi will help you as you practice includes the following:

Harvard medical school has said that Tai Chi has been known for “meditation in motion”, but it may be also be known for “medication in motion.” It will heal the body both physically and mentally.

Modern research has shown that Tai Chi has been good for many different health conditions:

All ages and skill levels can practice Tai Chi.   Tai Chi will help you feel more energized, balance, and vitality. The more you practice Tai Chi deeper your appreciation you will feel and the benefits will be great.

How to Improve Your Health and Wellness

If you suffer from fatigue, low immunity, stress, and anxiety … if you have problems focusing, reducing stress, and balance… if you have tried medication, counseling, and exericise, but there seems to be no effect and you are still struggling with health problems that linger and you feel imbalance. Then this message is just for you. Here’s why…

There is a way that you can do to help you feel more energized, overcome stress and anxiety, to improve your balance, health and wellness. You will be able to feel abundant energy, overcome pain, and feel more balanced in your life.

And you need to realize, there is a cost to not dealing with this…

If You Ignore It, It Just Gets Worse

What most people do when facing fatigue, anxiety, stress and an imbalanced life is to take medications, seek counseling, and read books on the subject. But for most people, none of that works.

And what happens if you just do nothing? If you just keep doing what you’ve been doing? You may continue to lose your health. You may develop severe depression and cardiovascular problems. You will not be able to do the things that you love and enjoy. You will continue to feel out of balance and unhealthy.

How We Have Helped People Achieve Optimum Health

I’ve got an answer that works. Here’s the story: In ancient China there was an exercise developed that is able to promote blood circulation, improve the function of your internal organs, and strengthen the body. This exercise and martial art is called Tai Chi.

Tai Chi is practiced worldwide. Tai chi has many health benefits:

It Worked For These People, And It Will Work For You

master-lu-687x1024

Here’s what it did for me… I have been practicing Tai Chi since I have been young. It has increased my flexibility and strength. It helps me to be more focused and manage my stress levels. And it’s not just me.

“Tai Chi a gift from Master Lu and Grand master Yin part of my everyday life

I started in tai chi with the Grand Master Yin at Chinese American school at Highland High in 1975 and then went to the studio to practice with Master Cheng Tsang Lu. Tai chi has been a part of my day since that time. Sometimes I greet the dawn with tai chi and other times wind down later in the day with tai chi. The genius and magical hands of Elaine Lu and the acupuncture of Master Lu made me virtually free from life long head aches.”

Joanna T.

Master Lu and his wife, Elaine, have been people who have had abilities to care for and educate my husband and I for the past 14 years. We have attended Tai Chi sessions at the Health Center about three times per week and have had some acupuncture treatments when needed. Tai Chi from Master Lu has been the most resourceful, deeply meaningful experience I could find in life for moving meditation and refocusing, centering myself after stresses of the day. Over the years, Master Lu has always been available at the scheduled times, always dependable and focused to lead a group in the simple but profound ways of this practice. Master Lu also has been available for us when we felt acupuncture would be necessary for ailments. My experience with his treatments has been truly healing. We know this family, including Taehao their son, are trustworthy and honorable people, remarkably skilled and practiced in the healing arts. We know they deeply care about all their clients and have contributed much to the community in which they live. Master Lu travels to Ogden, Utah every week to minister to his clients in the Weber County area also. We have paid a monthly fee to Master Lu all these years and feel it is the wisest use of our money for the greatest benefits. We send our love to them now that we have moved to St. George, Utah and are continuing the 2000-year-old Yang Long-Style Tai Chi Form with Master Gary Whitehead, an accomplished student of Master Lu and teacher of this form at Dixie State University. He also is a master of Kung Fu and teaches it there. We return to Master Lu’s Health Center whenever we visit Salt Lake City and enjoy renewing friendships with other long-time students there.”

Sandra T.

“Tai chi is often described as “meditation in motion,” but it might well be called “medication in motion.” There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice, which originated in China as a martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems. And you can get started even if you aren’t in top shape or the best of health.”

There are many patients who ask how many acupuncture treatments do I need?  That is a good question to ask.  At Master Lu’s Health Center, we typically recommend on average five treatments and we will reassess.  But then the question is do I need to keep coming forever?  That is also a good question to ask your Chinese physician.  Here are some reasons why continued care is good.

These suggestions come from Acupuncture Media Works.  We think they are a good synopsis why it is good to continue with your acupuncture and Chinese medicine care.

1) Even though you may not be in pain or discomfort, it takes longer to heal than is indicated by how you feel.  Your body continues to heal even when symptoms are gone.  Acupuncture and Chinese medicine treats the root of the problem. So when symptoms are gone, the root of the problem may still need to be treated therefore it is a good idea to continue to get treatments so your problem will be gone.

2) Chinese medicine is about prevention.  It is better to prevent an illness and maintain healthy.  Acupuncture and Chinese medicine will continue to strengthen your body so you maintain healthy.

2) Acupuncture and Chinese medicine builds upon itself. Each time you come for an acupuncture treatment it improves the healing process within your body.  You should get better and better each time you come in for a treatment.  In China, Chinese doctors will treat patients three to four times per week for a typical treatment course of ten. Then the doctors will reassess to see if treatments need to be spread more apart or if the patients has been “cured.”  Stopping or missing treatments could have a negative impact on your treatments.  If you came in for a treatment for low back pain then came back three weeks later, your pain may not have changed that much because too much time in between treatments went by.  It is best to have several treatments up front close together then reassess.
