What is acupuncture?

Chinese medicine is a complete medical system to diagnose and treat disease. There are five main branches of Chinese medicine: acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, exercise, Chinese medical massage (tui na), and nutrition and food therapy.   Here at Master Lu’s Health Center we practice all aspects of Chinese medicine. We will incorporate acupuncture, herbs, nutrition, and exercise to help you feel better and overcome your health condition.

Acupuncture is one of the most popular branches and modalities within Chinese medicine. It involves the insertion of very fine needles within specific points a long the body that will promote blood flow, circulation, and energy. Acupuncture will allow your body to be balanced and facilitate your body’s self -healing mechanisms.

Acupuncture has been utilized for over 3,000 years. It will enhance natural healing and function of the body. Acupuncture has been used to treat many different health conditions.

What to expect for your acupuncture treatment?

When you come in there will be an initial diagnostic period. This is the time when we will ask questions about your condition. After the diagnostic period we will then formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan.

The acupuncture needles are very fine. Sometimes you won’t even feel the needles at all. There may be times when you will feel a heaviness or sharp sensation. That type of sensation is the energy coming to the needle. When you feel that sensation that means that energy and blood is coming to the needle.

The needles are left in for around 30 min. During the 30 min. depending on your treatment plan you will either sit or lay down to relax. We will have relaxing music for you to help you feel more relaxed. After 30 min we will then take out the needles and give you health recommendations to help you even more with your health condition.

Does acupuncture hurt?

The acupuncture needles are very thin.   They are not like the needles that you will see at your doctor’s office or in the hospital. Because they are so thin and fine you will hardly even feel them. There may be some instances where you may feel like a sharpness or pinch like feeling, but it is not painful.

Do I need to wear anything special?

You don’t need to wear anything in particular. If you need to change clothes we have gowns that you can wear. Many conditions are treated without even taking clothes off. Sometimes it may be helpful to wear some loose clothing.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments depends on the condition and how long you may have had it for. Typically a series of acupuncture treatments are the best. What we typically recommend is to do at first around five treatments. After that we will then evaluate to see if you need more treatments or not.

Many times it is best to do a series of treatments up front and closer together in frequency that is the relief period. After the relief period we can spread treatments apart to correct any underlying issues. After the relief period depending on how you feel you can come in for maintenance and as an as needed basis.
